Mihkelson: Freedom for Ukraine Means Security for Us
Chair of the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, Marko Mihkelson, is traveling in Ukraine today - including its eastern areas - and meeting parliament, defense ministry and security service representatives.
“If we really want to see progress in Ukraine we should prepare for long-term and patient cooperation. The more constant the support of Ukraine's friends is the higher the chance is of the state succeeding. The most important thing is to remember that the freer and more successful Ukraine is, the more secure our own future is,” Mikelson said.
"Estonia is ready to help in Ukraine's reform process, especially after the association and free trade agreement with the EU, he said, adding that Ukraine needs stronger international support to stabilize the internal situation."
Fierce fighting has broken out between Ukrainian and Russian separatist forces, Reuters reports, in the area where Malaysia Airlines MH17 crashed on July 17 after being shot down by a ground-to-air missile, complicating any further recovery efforts of the remains of the 298 people who died aboard.
At least 18 people have died over the weekend in five areas in the eastern region.
