Arnold Rüütel: Crimea Events Part of a Bigger Picture
In an interview with Eesti Päevaleht published today, Rüütel said Russia has been interested in Estonia since Peter the Great, and Estonian ports are ideal for Russian submarines and larger ships.
He said many people on the top of the power ladder in Russia still consider the borders of the Soviet Union to be the rightful borders of Russia, and a number of MPs have called on those who helped break up the union to face punishment.
Speaking about current president Toomas Hendrik Ilves' very critical approach towards Russia, Rüütel said the hard truth, such as spoken by Ilves, should be said out loud.
