Land Board Maps Tallinn's Flood Areas
The Land Board released a map of Tallinn that shows which areas could potentially be threatened by floods if the sea level were to rise.
Tracing affected areas depending on the severity of the flooding, the map is based on an interval of sea level change between 0.5 and three meters. The map looks specifically at sea level change, and does not show the areas affected by major rainfall like the one that caused traffic congestions and some property damage in August.
It is extremely rare for the sea around Tallinn to rise above one meter, according to the agency. The last major flood occurred during a 2005 storm, when water rose 152 centimeters above sea level.
Raivo Vallner, acting director of the Land Board, said the map is meant to help the local government plan for emergency situations.
The agency has previously composed similiar maps for the towns of Pärnu, Haapsalu, Kuressaare and Tartu.
