Growing number of Finnish retirees moving to Estonia
An increasing number of Finnish pensioners are moving to Estonia for cheaper prices and more comfortable living.
The number of retirees moving to Estonia has increased steadily in recent years, Swedish-language daily Hufvudstadsbladet € reported according to YLE.
According to them, in 2014, 1,184 Finnish pensioners lived in Estonia, some 200 more than the previous year.
The lower cost of living and a more comfortable lifestyle are cited as key reasons for moving to Tallinn.
"We found that we could get a seaside apartment in central Tallinn for much less than in Helsinki," one of the expats told the paper.
"In Finland it feels like everything is forbidden and anything that isn’t forbidden is closed. Here, I like that I can go to the shop late at night if I want," another told HBL.
While the number of retired people moving to Estonia is increasing, the biggest group of pensioners living abroad - some 43,400 of them - live in Sweden. Germany, Spain and Australia are also popular, the paper wrote.
