Estonia Leads Peers in Rule of Law Index
Estonia has the strongest rule of law in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, according to the World Justice Project, a Washington-based NGO.
In its freshly released fifth annual index, the organization ranked Estonia at the top of its region in six out of eight categories, reported ETV.
"Where Estonia scores highest is limited government power, the absence of corruption, open government, regulatory enforcement, civil justice and criminal justice – so quite a few categories,“ said Joel Martinez, an analyst for the NGO.
There were also two criticisms: a higher-than-average crime level among other "high income“ countries, and a sometimes slow court process.
"Well really we're not that critical. I think it's important to say that every country can always be improving in all of these categories. Sweden in general scores highest in most of them, but there's still plenty of improvement to be had in Sweden. I'm sure people will agree. And Estonia is a similar case, where, even though these are two categories where it doesn't lead the region, it does perform very well. But there's also room for improvement,“ Martinez said.
The World Justice Project interviewed 97,000 citizens and 2,500 experts in 97 countries.
