Starting from Monday, financially troubled families with multiple children can apply for government grants to help them buy or improve their homes.

KredEx, the government's credit agency, has announced that it will be accepting applications for its latest round of the grants, which are similar to those it has offered intermittently in the past.

To be eligible, a family must have at least four children under 20 years of age and a declared income over the past two years that works out to less than 300 euros per household member per month.

In most cases, the grants have a ceiling of 6,500 euros, though for the rare household that has eight children or more, the limit is doubled.

The funds can be used for building, expanding or renovating a home as well as for purchasing a home or paying off the principal on a home loan.

The deadline for applications is May 21.
