Ämari Airbase to Receive New Radar System
The Ministry of Defense today signed an agreement to equip its main airbase in Ämari with a precision approach radar (PAR) system, which will allow all types of NATO aircraft to land there.
Currently only aircraft equipped with navigation devices used in civil aviation can safely land at Ämari, but a number of military planes, including some jet fighters, require airports to have a PAR, which guides planes during landing, the ministry said today.
The 7.1 million euro system from US company ITT Exelis will be arrive in Estonia in the summer of 2015.
Ingvar Pärnamäe of the ministry said that the radar system is one of the last major investments needed to bring Ämari up to NATO standards.
