GALLERY: Tallinn Fashion Week Goes 'After Dark'
Tallinn Fashion Week expanded in 2014 to four days and two venues, with the Salme Culture Center hosting the first three days, as in 2013.
A variety of different collections were displayed, highlights including an anniversary show to celebrate 20 years of the Ivo Nikkolo label, one of the best-known Estonian brands. A fourth day with the theme "After Dark Couture" took place in the Seaplane Harbor Museum on Sunday. The aim of this final day was to showcase evening wear.
Aldo Järvsoo, founder and organizer of Tallinn Fashion Week and an exhibitor on Sunday, said in response to the reasoning behind the "After Dark" theme, "Mostly, the calmest time is the black and dark time. I made my evening gowns almost too pretty. I just went with the flow."
On the importance of TFW, Järvsoo said, "every year a few designers were doing collections, and it's not enough for Estonia; it's not enough for the world. It's needed for Estonia, and it's needed for the whole world to see good design. You send the message to Sweden and then after maybe five years they send the fashion editors, and they're usually amazed it's good. We were members of this shit thing called the USSR for 50 years, so it's okay to be blocked off from the world for 20 years. We're trying [to open up now]."
