A University of Tartu philosophy and ethics professor says the teachers' strike is justified as long as it is not manipulated, but the protests could backfire if they become a rowdy free-for-all.

The academician, University of Tartu Ethics Centre director Margit Sutrop, said on ETV on March 6 that the timing and method for demanding better working conditions were important.

"The question is whether we are able to rationally signal that we wish to negotiate on certain choices," said Sutrop.

She cautioned that the wave of strikes that started with support actions in Narva on March 5 could become a dangerous clamoring that no longer considers the interests of those who need improved conditions.

She said it was already evident that "certain political forces" were using the strike in their own interests.
