Police, Military Special Pensions Under Threat
One of the ways that recruiters such as the Academy of Security Sciences promote police and military professions is the promise of special pensions, but the government may soon rescind these benefits.
With Parliament reviewing a bill to amend the Public Service Act, the Social Affairs Ministry has initiated an effort to get rid of the special pensions, specifically those attached to the length of a civil servant's tenure, reported Eesti Päevaleht.
This kind of pension is available to police officers and professional members of the armed forces.
The Social Affairs Ministry plan would take the pension away from all those who have served for less than 50 percent of the required tenure.
The reforms are likely to arouse a heated debate in the Cabinet because the defense and interior ministries oppose the proposal.
