Cohabitation Act Scrapes By in Committee
The Cohabitation Act survived another day in Parliament after the Legal Affairs Committee deadlocked on a vote on whether the bill should be rejected.
The 5-5 split means that tomorrow the plenary session of Parliament will vote on whether to continue deliberating the bill in the fall.
If none of the parties in Parliament propose to table the bill tomorrow, the first reading will conclude without a vote and amendments can be proposed until September 12.
The bill, introduced by 40 MPs, would give unmarried cohabiting partners of either gender a way to register their partnership and property relationships.
There has been a backlash against the amendment from a party not represented in Parliament, the Conservative People's Party, and "family values" groups.
