Residents Protest Stench and Flies of Megafarm
Fearing that their homes could be overrun by a putrid smell and pesky flies, community members in a rural municipality are protesting the establishment of a dairy barn for 2,700 cattle.
Around 100 residents from the communities of Taikse and Mäeküla sent the Türi local government a letter opposing the planned location of the dairy barn, which would reside a stone's throw away from center of town in Taikse, which has a population of 200, reported ETV.
The company building the barn is Estonia OÜ, chaired by Jaanus Marrandi - former minister of agriculture - who said the barn will create jobs and help develop the region.
At a community hall meeting on Thursday evening, Marrandi said the final decision for the site of stable would take an environmental impact survey into consideration.
Waiting to hear the results of the environmental assessment, the municipal government has not yet taken a stance on whether the planned location is acceptable.
Estonia OÜ will build a nearby biogas plant, which will use the waste to create power.
