Eesti Post Scraps Every 10th Drop Box
The national postal service Eesti Post has taken down 328 little-used drop boxes this spring, which makes up 10 percent of their collection box network.
Spokeswoman for Eesti Post Inge Suder told Postimees that the company is obligated by law to empty all drop boxes a minimum of five days per week. Therefore, having to check little-used collection boxes means additional logistics expenses.
Currently there are over 2,810 drop boxes in service in Estonia.
Initially, Eesti Post had asked the Competition Authority to approve scrapping of 361 drop boxes, but the authority cut the number by 33.
Competition Authority communications regulatory division chief specialist Indrek Ahermaa said that the agency has set a three-month test period for the postal service. If more completely unused drop boxes are found during that time, a new application will be considered. The company must, however, keep in mind that there has to be at least one land mail collection box per municipality, regardless of how often it is used, Ahermaa added.
