Nation Averages Over 10 Work-Related Accidents Per Day
Estonia's workplace accident rate is among the worst in Europe, averaging more than 10 injuries per day.
Around 1,000 injuries and four deaths have taken place since January alone, Silja Soon, chief specialist at the Labor Inspectorate's Health and Safety division, told ERR radio.
Looking strictly at the number of accidents ending in death, Soon said, Estonia ranks sixth worst. Holland and Sweden have the lowest number of deaths while Greece has the highest.
Soon put equal blame for Estonia's bad safety record on businesses who ignore safety issues in their pursuit of profits and workers who don't take security measures seriously.
Her comments came at the start of a new campaign by the Labor Inspectorate to raise the level of safety awareness in the workplace.
