Controversy Over Same-Sex Marriages Hinders National Goals, Says MEP
The IRL member of the European Parliament, Tunne Kelam, said the topic of same-sex marriages is artificial and should not be dealt with.
“The real problem in Estonia is a declining population, that few families are created and no children raised,” Kelam said in a press release today.
He said it is more important to value families and children, not personal needs, adding that young men were to blame. He said young women might in theory be interested in having children and a family but the males were more interested in shorter relationships.
A working group was recently set up in Parliament to draft a law which would allow cohabitation to be officially registered by both opposite-sex and same-sex couples. Although the group consists of members from all four Parliament factions, IRL has voiced its opposition to the idea.
