"Take a reflector and reflect" pilot launched
Nõmme district of Tallinn now has a tree decorated with reflectors, which everyone can take home and attach to their clothes, to make them more visible in the dark.
The tree is a pilot of the "Võta helkur ja helgi" (Take a reflector and reflect) youth project, which the organizers hope will make people understand the importance of wearing a reflector and so reduce the number of accidents involving pedestrians, especially children.
The tree was decorated by the local students with a little help from Snow Leopard Lauri, who is the mascot of the Tallinn Municipal Police.
"It is very important to wear a reflector in the dark and I'm glad that, with the help of good and active kids from Nõmme, we now have a tree from which every citizen can pick a reflector," said district head Tiit Terik.
Meeli Hunt from the Municipal Police added that the pedestrians still haven't realized that they are not visible to the drivers, especially when wearing dark clothes. "We hope that the project makes people reflect on the need to wear a reflector."
The tree is located near the old Nõmme railway station.
