Russia Interested in Submarine Wreck Discovered Near Hiiumaa
The Russian embassy in Tallinn said it wants to send its navy divers to inspect a wreck of a Russian submarine discovered near Hiiumaa.
The wreck, which was only recently confirmed as the submarine Akula, has attracted great interest from Russia, as it is a one-of-a-kind, Eesti Päevaleht reported today.
The site was discovered in 2012, with experts thinking it was a German u-boat, sank in 1941. The National Heritage Board has put the wreck under temporary protection, until further studies can be carried out.
The Akula was built in 1907 and sank by a mine in 1915, with all 35 crew members perishing.
A register of ship wrecks in Estonian water has 566 names, the location of most are unknown. There are 52 underwater shrines, and one more could be erected for the Akula.
