Estonia Admitting More Asylum Seekers
Although the numbers of asylum requests is still minuscule, Estonia has significantly increased the number of affirmative decisions, having admitted 15 people so far this year.
Estonia granted only three requests for political asylum in the first nine months of 2013.
Seven Sudanese, four Syrians, three Kosovars and one Russian received asylum this year. Last year, the nationalities of the three people were Afghan, Syrian and Russian, Postimees reports.
Police and Border Guard migration official Maige Lepp said that more Ukrainians have put in requests in connection with the events there, but the number of Sudanese is also significantly up.
In total, Estonia received 107 asylum requests compared to 74 during the same period last year.
