Ratas hoping for next generation of basketball stars
Thousands of children around Estonia will take part in a series of basketball lessons in schools, given by national team professionals.
President of the Estonian Basketball Association Jüri Ratas, who is also the Parliament's deputy speaker, said he hopes the project will bring forth new basketball stars, such as Tiit Sokk, an Olympic gold medalist with the Soviet Union team in 1988, Martin Müürsepp, the first Estonian in the NBA and Kristjan Kangur, one of the most decorated current team players.
Basketball stars will teach one lesson in 100 schools around the country, beginning in Saaremaa on Wednesday.
“The Estonian Basketball Association, with the help of its partners, aims to visit 100 schools, show a few basketball exercises, run a basketball lesson, and invite kids to a practice," Ratas said.
Earlier this month the men's national team participated in its first major tournament since 2001, the European Basketball Championships, finishing 17th.
