Kanepi Upset in Second Round of Australian Open
Kaia Kanepi was knocked out of the second round of the Australian Open by 56th ranked Ekaterina Makarova 2-6, 5-7.
The first set started with both women failing to hold serve, and the pattern continued until the sixth game, when Makarova held serve to go up 4-2.
Kanepi, ranked 25th, got her serve working in the second set and the Estonian went up 3-1. Again the service game sputtered for both players. With the second set tied at 5 games apiece, the Russian got a crucial service break.
Kanepi only landed 52 percent of her first serves (69 percent for Makarova) and had six double-faults compared to none for Makarova, with identical figures for unforced errors.
