Last Chance Saloon for Piiroja
Former football national team captain Raio Piiroja yesterday started pre-season training with FC Flora after a lengthy injury lay-off.
The 33-year-old defender, who has 109 caps for the national team and has been plagued by injuries in the last few years, switched to FC Flora from Holland's Vitesse, reported sport.err.ee.
“I would like to have one last opportunity to avoid a disappointing ending [to a career]. The shin injury still causes problems. There is a greater chance of failure than success,” Piiroja said.
Karol Mets, a 19-year-old Flora defender, said that such an experienced player would add a great deal to the team. Flora finished third in the 2012 season after back-to-back league titles.
Piiroja has spent most of his career playing for Fredrikstad of Norway, which won the Norwegian Football Cup in 2006.
The league season kicks off in March.
