Ice Skaters Prepare for Peipsi Marathon
Ice skating enthusiasts will head to Lake Peipsi this Saturday for the fourth Kalevipoeg marathon.
Some 500 ice skaters are expected to turn out for the race named after a folk hero credited for once wading through the lake, according to Jõgeva County governor, the event's head organizer, Viktor Svjatõshev, ETV reported.
Ten and 30-kilometer races will be held. Those who are less competitive can also opt for the five-kilometer distance.
The starting line will be at the mouth of the Mustvee river, where the ice of the frozen lake, the fifth largest in Europe, is now 50 to 60 centimeters thick.
On Monday, organizers carved out the ice rink, and they now have the task of flattening and smoothing it out before the marathon this weekend.
"Having been a judge here for years, I have never seen ice this good,” said Väino Treiman.
