Railway Operator Launches GPS-Based Info System
Railway operator Edelaraudtee has implemented a GPS-based information system that allows passengers access to real-time data on train locations as well as expected arrival and departure times.
According to the company, such an in-depth information system is unique to Estonia's domestic transportation industry.
Passengers can now see the information displayed on screens installed in Tallinn, Türi, Rapla and Viljandi railway stations. Annemari Oherd, head of the company’s sales department, confirmed that the screens will soon be placed in other stations as well.
The public can also access the information through the company’s website. “As Estonia is covered by mobile internet, the new solution will, figuratively speaking, bring the information displayed on the screens in [railway stations] straight into the pockets of smartphone users,” said Oherd.
Edelaraudtee, which transports both freight and passengers, is the only diesel train operator in Estonia. According to the company, it serves around 1.8 million passengers per year.
