Traffic Violations by Embassy Cars Come Under Scrutiny
Vehicles carrying diplomatic license plates must comply with all the traffic regulations and can no longer expect to escape the notice, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the police force agreed at a meeting on September 14.
This is also supported by the Vienna Convention, according to which embassy staff must comply with the traffic regulations of the country they are stationed in.
Tallinn municipal police (MUPO) head Monica Rand said that parking enforcement personnel have noted "quite a large number" of parking violations by diplomatic vehicles in the city. However, fines can only be issued in case the person who has committed the violation can be identified. So far, MUPO has documented such instances but has not issued fines in the case of diplomatic vehicles, wrote Postimees.
“This was actually one of the reasons why we wanted to meet at the ministry, to agree on further action,” said Rand.
Currently, MUPO does not possess a list of owners of diplomatic license plates. However, the enquiry has been made and soon all violations will be processed according to the law, said Rand.
