Wolves Kill 6 Sheep, Injure 4
The island of Saaremaa was not a safe place for sheep this week. Wolves killed six of them and injured four on a farm in Saare County in the early hours of July 13.
"We were welcomed by a gruesome sight on our ten-hectare pasture where we found one dead animal after another. Surprisingly, the wolves only attacked white sheep, leaving the dark Gotland sheep untouched," Kaido Eigo, owner of the farm told Postimees.
According to Eigo, it is likely that none of the four injured animals will survive and the future of one lamb whose mother was killed during the attack is still uncertain.
Wolves cause losses for farmers everywhere on the mainland, but northern Estonia and Jõgeva County are most at risk.
Last year, the amount spent by the state on indemnifying damages caused by large wild animals such as wolves, lynx and bears was around 80,000 euros.
