Defense Forces Surgeons Return from Afghanistan
The latest group of Estonian home reserve surgeons has returned from a three-month training mission at Camp Bastion, one the busiest field hospitals in Afghanistan.
The medical team consisted of four surgeons and a nurse from the North Estonia Medical Center and University of Tartu Hospital who volunteered for the duty, a statement from the Defense Forces said.
The group, the third such Estonian contingent sent to Afghanistan, completed training with UK personnel before starting work.
One of the surgeons taking part, Major Arno Ruusalepp, said that such missions lay a foundation for having Estonian medics permanently stationed at the camp, adding to Estonia's contribution to the ISAF security effort.
Camp Bastion, with a staff of over 300, is equipped to handle severe injuries, including bullet wounds and injuries received from mines and improvised explosives.
