Tons of Wartime Explosives Continue to Surface
In the first six months of the year, the bomb squad neutralized 1,255 stray explosives, compared to 794 in same period of last year.
Rescue Service spokesman Reimo Raja attributed the higher number to the slower snowmelt last year. Most of the grenades, mines, missiles, and the like discovered last year - 2,308 in all - were found in the second half of the year, uudised.err.ee reported.
Explosives dating from World War II commonly surface in Estonia, as intense battles took place in areas that are sparsely populated. In April, the bomb squad recovered and disposed of around 100 explosive remnants in various regions of the country on just a single day.
