Red Army Soldier's Remains Returned to Russia
On Saturday, the remains of Afanassi Lenkov, a Red Army soldier, were handed over in Ivangorod to representatives from the city of Severodvinsk.
The soldier who died in 1944 was found in Saaremaa in 2011, reported ETV. The deputy mayor of Severodvinsk, Alexander Ussov, said Lenkov's relatives left Severodvinsk around 40 years ago and city officials have been unable to get in touch with his family.
“Therefore we decided the remains of the soldier should be buried with honors in the place where he was drafted for the war,” said Ussov.
Estonia has previously given the remains of four Red Army soldiers to Russia. The organizers in all cases have been from the Ida-Viru County's war history club Otsing.
The remains of over 700 Red Army soldiers and 300 German soldiers have been found over the years. The majority of Red Army soldiers who died in Estonia have been buried in a common grave at Sinimäe.
