Medals Past: Estonia's Winter Olympics Achievements
With the prospect of a medal-less Winter Games looming for Estonia, we have decided to take a look back at how the country has fared in previous Winter Olympics competitions since re-independence.
1992 Albertville
Despite fielding 20 athletes, Estonia won no medals in the first Games that it participated in after breaking away from the USSR.
1994 Lillehammer
Twenty-six athletes took part, but again, zilch.
1998 Nagano
Same story: nada.
2002 Salt Lake City
This was the breakthrough year for Estonian cross-country skiing, with Andrus Veerpalu scoring both a gold and a silver (15 km classical, 50 km mass start) and Jaak Mäe taking bronze, also in the 15 km classical.
2006 Turin
Estonia's best Winter Games to date came with a triple-gold result, thanks in part to Veerpalu's repeating his gold medal victory in 15 km classical. But it was another cross-country skier, Kristina Šmigun, who became an instant national hero by taking gold in both the women's 10 km classical and the 15 km pursuit.
2010 Vancouver
There was far less fanfare for Estonia in 2010, but the country did not come away empty-handed. Šmigun, who was by now Šmigun-Vähi, picked up a silver in the women's 10 km freestyle.
