Suspect Arrested in Snelli Park Murder Case
An arrest has been made in last year's brutal clubbing death of a woman near Tallinn's Old Town.
The 28-year-old man, identified only as Vjatšeslav, had no previous criminal record. He was ordered held on August 27 by the Harju County Court.
The apparently random attack on two women took place in the early morning hours of November 23 in Snelli Park, just outside the walls of Old Town. One of the victims was killed, and another woman was injured.
As winter darkness closed in, the "man with the club" sowed an atmosphere of uneasiness in a city where such incidents are uncommon.
For months, investigators had made what was perceived by the public as little progress in the case.
Police said on August 29 that the man's lack of previous convictions and lack of a fixed address complicated their efforts.
If convicted, the man faces 8-20 years in prison.
