Post Office Flooded by Seasonal Packages from China
Postal service Eesti Post has stepped up its activity for the Christmas season. It is having to sort through 10,000 parcels a day, with a 700 percent increase from Chinese online stores this year.
Board member Ansi Arumeel told ETV on Sunday that most of the packages arrive from China, adding that Estonians have discovered that they can order goods more cheaply from there.
The state-owned company has hired an extra 50 staff for the season, to cope with the increased number of packaged, but a box titled “letters to Santa” is still mostly empty.
Between 100,000 to 300,000 letters a day are sorted mechanically, but 90 percent are official letters and bills.
