Tallinn Installing Traffic Counters at Major Intersections
On February 28, Tallinn’s Transportation Department began the process of installing traffic counting devices at 11 of the capital's largest intersections.
According to Postimees, the counters will be operational as of April 1 and will be used to register both the number of vehicles passing through the intersections and their type. The data with then be used to carry out changes in traffic management.
The devices can recognize five types of vehicles: passenger cars, various sizes of trucks and public transportation vehicles.
In addition, each of the devices will give a constant live video feed, which will be publicly accessible through the internet. “Therefore people can see at which intersection the load exceeds the average level of congestion,” said Ats Tamm, chairman of the company Signaal, which is tasked with installing the devices.
Tamm said that the devices should be installed on at least 20 to 25 intersections in order to get a complete picture of city traffic, but that funding currently didn't allow for that size of project.
