Tallinn Hosting Three Checkers Tournaments in August
Tallinn is hosting the European Youth Championships in checkers this week, with 350 competitors from more than 20 countries. Two other tournaments in the game will be held this month.
"August is the month of a checkers festival for Estonia and Tallinn," said Janek Mäggi, the president of both the European Draughts Confederation and the Estonian Draughts Association. He noted that the European championships in lightning checkers will take place here from August 9 to10 followed by the Youth World Championships in Russian checkers (played on a 64-square checkerboard instead of the 10x10 version).
"What is most important for Estonia is that Estonia and Tallinn have become perhaps even a favorite spot for international championships," said Mäggi.
European Draughts Confederation managing director Viktoria Lehtmets said that it was a great honor to be hosting the event. "In three weeks, Tallinn will be visited by about 700 sportsmen and -women from more than 25 countries of the world. Today, Tallinn will also host the European Draughts Federation congress."
The European Draughts Confederation, founded in 1998, is the only international sports association headquartered in Estonia.
