UT Rector Delivers Dalai Lama's Honorary Doctorate
At the Academy of Sciences today, August 18, University of Tartu Rector Alar Karis handed the Dalai Lama a medal and certificate signifying the Tibetan spiritual leader's honorary doctorate in Oriental studies.
The university's council had in fact granted the doctorate in May 2005, though today the rector had an opportunity to deliver the award in person.
"The decision was made to give the Dalai Lama the title of honorary doctor of Oriental studies for his dissemination of humanistic ideas and peaceful solutions throughout the world, his support of Estonia's aspirations for freedom, his large contribution to developing and promoting international cooperation in Oriental studies at the University of Tartu, and his raising international awareness of the University of Tartu," said Karis.
The last day of the Dalai Lama's three-day visit to Estonia continued today with his lecture entitled "Buddhism and Science."
He is scheduled to depart the country at 14:45.
