Kuressaare Permits Swimming Again
The sea around Kuressaare, on the island of Saaremaa, which was found to be unsuitable for swimming due to fecal pollution at the beginning of August, no longer poses a health risk as the pollution levels declined in the past weeks.
The source of the pollution has still not been found. The only thing that has been determined so far is that the fecal pollution that surpassed the legal limit by tens of times drifted to Kuressaare from the nearby Põduste River, reported ETV.
"Indeed, after three weeks, the water at Kuressaare meets the requirements again. The most recent tests show that the concentration of bacteria in the water has dropped to within legal limits, so we were able to raise the yellow flag today to indicate that it is safe to go swimming again," said Deputy Mayor of Kuressaare Kalle Koov.
Koov confirmed that swimming at the beach of Kuressaare no longer poses a health risk for people.
