Kaur Heads into Season Closer Leading WRC Academy
Egon Kaur has something in common with the Estonian football team this weekend: he needs to defeat the Irish.
With the last stage of the World Rally Championship contested today on the roads of Wales, Kaur and co-driver Erik Lepikson are leading the first WRC Academy series.
The closest competitor is Craig Breen, who along with co-driver Gareth Roberts is 20 points from Kaur.
A total of 25 points are available at the Rally GB in Wales. The Spaniard Yeray Lemes is third.
Kaur has won three rallies: Portugal, Sardinia and Finland, while Breen won in Germany.
The course for WRC Academy drivers is traditionally shorter, and they drive identical Ford Fiesta R2 models. The results - who wins the 500,000 euro scholarship - should be in by November 12.
"We're ready," said Kaur on sport.err.ee. "On Sunday we tested the car we've driven in Estonia to warm up. [...] But the rally will be difficult, the roads are slippery and wet and it's calling for heavy rain."
Other Estonians in Wales will be Miko-Ove Niinemäe and Toomas Valter - also in WRC Academy - and in the main rally, Ott Tänak and Kuldar Sikk will make their first start in a WRC car and Karl Kruuda and Martin Järveoja will be driving a Ford Fiesta S2000.
