The number of complaints over misuse of personal data has increased sevenfold in the last five years, according to the Data Protection Inspectorate.

While in 2007 there were 110 registered complaints, last year the number had climbed to 818, the agency said in a statement, adding that people’s awareness on the importance of personal data protection is also increasing.

According to the inspectorate, the majority of complaints filed last year were related to the misuse of the population registry data. However, stricter approach and improved information exchange with the Interior Ministry about breaches of privacy were bringing results, said Viljar Peep, director of the inspectorate.

Peep said that his agency, together with the Interior Ministry, Health Board and the e-health foundation are aiming at zero tolerance against using professional access to sensitive data for making unwarranted queries in databases.

On a more positive note, figures suggest that access to public information has significantly improved. The number of complaints over accessibility of public information dropped from 137 in 2008 to 46 last year.
