AME Has Big Aspirations for Newly Opened Hangar at Tallinn Airport
On Wednesday, Air Maintenance Estonia and Tallinn Airport opened a new hangar, which they hope will become a hub for airplane maintenance that will attract clients from Europe and Russia.
Said to be unique in the Nordics, the 5,000-square-meter hangar can fit up to three aircraft at a time, boosting AME's servicing capacity from 24 to 72 airplanes per year, reported ETV.
“This is a major boost for the Estonian economy,” said CEO David Williams. “And especially as I say for the youth. We want this to be the number one maintenance department in Europe. It wants to be the first one that anyone thinks of. They need to come to Tallinn.”
The new hangar is owned by Tallinn Airport, which is renting it to AME. Originally the technical department of Estonian Air, it was acquired from SAS by the private equity company BaltCap in 2010. Currently with around 160 employees, AME said the new hangar will allow it carry out a planned doubling of its workforce .
