Elion Denies Cyber Attack to Blame for Extensive Outages
Director of technology for Elion, Kalev Reiljan, said the failure that caused cascading problems at the telecommunication company and digital services provider was a perfect storm of an outage and not caused by cyber attack.
"I can completely, definitively and categorically say that this was not due to an external influence," he told ETV.
He told ETV that 36 hours after the systems went down, affecting corporate websites, digital TV subscribers and e-mail users, not all problems were fixed.
"The current status is that digital TV is finally stabilized. We had one more hour-long interruption in digital TV last night, where the television did not function correctly for some customers."
Business e-mail service was restored at 05:00 Thursday. Estonian Air, among other corporate websites, was back up on Wednesday evening.
"The last step is restoring hot.ee service. A number of accounts are still non-functional, because the amount of e-mail that is on hold is huge."
Reiljan said the backlog could overburden servers and cause new problems if not managed properly.
He said Elion had already received claims for damages related to the failure.
