In the first 30 days of free public transport, an additional 3,000 people registered as Tallinn residents.

The city's total population is currently 422,830, according to the Population Register.

The pace of registration growth has escalated in the last few months - October saw 366 new residents sign up, 475 more did so in November and 1,248 in December, according to a city press release.

Taavi Aas, deputy mayor of Tallinn, attributed the growth to the fact that Tallinn residency guarantees the right to free public transport.

The increase in registrations is welcomed by city officials. Municipalities like Tallinn receive a 11.4 percent cut from the personal income taxes of every resident.
