Võro People Wave New Flag
A historical and linguistically distinct region in southern Estonia hoisted its new official flag on Thursday, chosen by a poll of 955 locals.
The flag symbolizes the eight parishes of Vana-Võromaa - a region that incudes modern-day Võru County and parts of Põlva, Tartu and Valga Counties - and was hoisted at Kääpa school, 5 km from the town of Võru, reported ETV.
“We truly hope that people will acquire and use a (Võro) flag and hoist it next to the Estonian flag,” said Triinu Ojar, the head of the Võro Society, VKKF.
Võru County is the southwesternmost county in Estonia, bordering Russia and Latvia.
In an otherwise homogenous country, Võro identity has stood out mainly due to the language variety of the same name, which is spoken by at least 50,000 people.
