College Entrance Season Drawing to a Close
With a couple days left to apply to Estonian higher education institutions for admission in the fall semester, the schools have reported interest largely consistent with the levels of previous years.
In Estonia's traditional college town, the University of Tartu has so far received 6,700 bachelor's and master's applications, ETV reported. That figure has decreased slightly compared with past years, due to recent legal reforms which reduced the number of programs a student could apply to from four to two.
As in previous years, the most popular areas of study among applicants to the University of Tartu are medicine and law.
Law is also the most sought after major at Tallinn University, which has so far received 4,300 entry applications. Other popular fields at the university are psychology and political science.
The country's premier tech school, Tallinn University of Technology, has also scooped up 4,500 applications, with the most popular program being informatics, followed by business, logistics, computer science, gene technology and product development.
"Compared with last year, there is greater than expected interest for technology fields, especially IT and informatics. There is also a record number of tuition-free positions available at the Tallinn University of Technology, and we expect a host of new students in the field of product development and technology, which was extremely popular last year,“ said Heiki Lemba, a board member.
The application deadline for fall semester at all of the main colleges and universities falls at the end of this week or the start of the next.
