Cruise Ships Continue Dumping Sewage into the Baltic
The World Wildlife Fund reported Wednesday that more than half of the Baltic cruise ships dump their sewage into the sea midway. Nor is the Port of Tallinn blameless.
The European Cruise Council pledged in May last year that ships would stop dumping sewage midway if Baltic seaports provided adequate disposal services for no extra charge.
The report criticized the Port of Tallinn for not meeting the requirements.
Both Stockholm and Helsinki have implemented the free services. However, of the 240 vessels visiting Stockholm this year, less than 50 percent have used them.
Research shows that the shallow, semi-enclosed and brackish Baltic Sea is particularly vulnerable to pollution and takes far longer than many other large bodies of water to flush out toxins and other harmful substances.
