Number of drownings lowest since Estonia regained independence
35 people died in water-related accidents last year, the lowest number in Estonia since the country regained independence.
The Estonian Rescue Board has completed an analysis of circumstances and statistics regarding deadly water-related accidents of 2019.
A vast majority, 30, of the people drowned were men. The average age of drowned was 53, 50 for men but 69 for women. The number of people who drowned while swimming decreased compared 2018, whereas 51 percent of drownings were a result of stumbling or falling into water.
Of the people who drowned, 66 percent were intoxicated, whereas the proportion of intoxicated drowned has risen year by year. All people who drowned while intoxicated were men.
No children drowned in 2019. 20 people were rescued from water-related accidents, a fifth of whom were children.
