May 2020 was significantly colder than average, with temperatures dipping below freezing not uncommon, it appears from an overview by the Estonian Weather Service.
The average air temperature in Estonia was 9 degrees Celsius in May, or 1.4 degrees colder than average.
A new high temperature record for the month was set on May 27, when the weather station at Tiirikoja on the northwestern coast of Lake Peipus recorded a temperature of 22.4 degrees. The lowest air temperature recorded last month, meanwhile, was -5.2 degrees, registered in Jõhvi on May 13.
Precipitation in Estonia averaged 32 millimeters last month, or 78 percent of the norm. The highest one-day precipitation level of 15 millimeters was recorded in Heltermaa, Hiiumaa, on May 11.
Estonia averaged a total of 312.4 hours of sunshine in May, or 113 percent of the norm for the month.
The average air temperature during the second period of ten days in May stood at 6.3 degrees. Taking into account records dating back to 1960, the second third of May had never previously been this cold.
