Large amounts of historic ammunition discovered in Ida-Viru County
A large amount of ammunition from World War II shooting ranges was found near Valaste waterfall on Tuesday by bomb detection squads in Ida-Viru County. Traffic on the Saka – Toila – Ontika road was partially halted while clearing was underway.
Ave Oad, the chief miner of the East Estonian bomb group, said the aim of the work is to check the battlefields of coastal protection batteries during the Second World War.
"Munitions have been found here before and it was thought that there were more, and today the assumptions were confirmed. Unfortunately, no one can say how much ammunition may be here," said Oad, who confirmed that a few dozen projectiles had already been found before noon.
"Once the findings have been identified, we will assess their danger and, if possible, transport them to a site for destruction," Oad said.
The East Estonian and South Estonian bomb detection groups of the Rescue Board worked in cooperation with the deminers of the 1st Infantry Brigade of the Defense Forces.
