Government Office awaiting feedback on Estonia 2035 development strategy
The Government Office (Riigikantselei) is awaiting feedback from all residents of Estonia on the draft of the country's long-term development strategy titled "Estonia 2035" to give it the final touches before forwarding the draft to the government and the Riigikogu.
The draft of the strategy sets five goals for Estonia:
- Estonians are smart and active people who care for their health;
- Estonian society is caring, cooperation-minded and open;
- Estonian economy is strong, innovative, and responsible;
- Living environment of Estonia takes into account everyones' needs, is safe and of high quality;
- Estonia is an innovative, trustworthy, and people-centered state.
Henry Kattago, director for strategy at the Government Office, said: "The draft of the 'Estonia 2035' strategy has been prepared with the involvement of very large numbers of people. During the idea collection, discussions, seminars and analyses nearly 17,000 people made their contribution to the preparation of the long-term development plan for Estonia."
Kattago added: "We are not used to thinking every day what the impact of our today's decisions will be on the country's future. With a long-term development strategy we can knowingly direct the country's development."
"Estonia 2035" will also help improve the strategic planning of the state more broadly.
Kattago stated: "Having cross-sectoral strategic goals that have been agreed upon will presumably reduce fragmentation between different fields and solve concerns related to cooperation better than has been the case to date. We will be able to also reduce bureaucracy that goes with strategic planning and the number of strategy documents, and better determine the division of responsibilities."
"We consider it important for the general part of the strategy to be endorsed by the Riigikogu," Kattago said, adding that since life is in constant change, one definitely needs to maintain flexibility and make changes to the strategy when necessary.
Members of the Riigikogu, ministries, government agencies, local governments and their organizations, as well as non-governmental partners, business operators, scientists and experts have taken part in preparing the strategy.
The government initiated the drafting of the "Estonia 2035" strategy in March 2018. The agencies responsible for the preparation of the strategy are the Government Office and the Ministry of Finance.
Feedback on the draft of the strategy is awaited by July 27.
