A fresh draft mandate by the Ministry of Economic Affairs would set stricter energy consumption limits next year.

In an effort to smooth the transition to “near-zero energy buildings” envisioned in the nation's development program for 2021, construction standards for new homes next year will decrease from the current annual limit of 180 kilowatt hours per square meter to 160, reported Postimees.

By 2021, the limit will be brought down to 50 kilowatt hours per square meter annually.

Government buildings will be expected to meet that requirement two years prior.
