Prosecutor applies to take man who caused Laagna tee crash into custody
The North District Prosecutor's Office has applied to Harju County Court that the young man, who caused a four-car collision on Tallinn's Laagna tee that resulted in two people being killed and several injured, be taken into custody.
North District Prosecutor Diana Helila told BNS tests performed in hospital on the man who caused the accident did not detect that he had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
"We launched criminal proceedings regarding the incident, and according to the data collected so far, the BMW's speed was 200 kilometers per hour at the time of the accident. On Sunday, the 20-year-old driver was under medical surveillance, and on Monday, police interrogated him and filed a suspicion against him. On Tuesday, the prosecutor's office will submit an application to the court for the man's arrest, because in our opinion the man is dangerous and may continue to commit crimes while at large," Helila said.
"We wish all those injured in the accident strength to heal. According to current information, there is a 32-year-old woman in serious condition in hospital who had been standing in the bus pavilion at the time of the accident. Passengers traveling in the Volvo are also in the hospital, a 57-year-old woman who had been sitting in the passenger seat is in extremely grave condition."
The alarm center received a call at 6:38 p.m. reporting a collision involving four passenger vehicles -- a BMW, a Volvo, a Toyota and a Ford -- on Laagna Road. All vehicles were driving away from the city center and toward Mustakivi bridge at the time of the accident.
Raavo Jarva from the North Prefecture of the Police and Border Guard Board said that the BMW first collided with the Ford. The collision resulted in the death of a pedestrian, a woman who had been standing at a bus stop, at the scene. A day later, the man who had been driving the Ford died in hospital.
Altogether six people were injured, including all five people in the car as well as another person who had been standing near the woman at the bus stop.
There was one person in both the BMW and the Toyota, who both suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for a checkup.
There were two people in the Volvo, one of whom is in severe condition in hospital. The people in the Volvo passenger also had with them a dog who ran away from the scene of the accident, but was caught later by animal shelter staff.
During the investigation, it became clear that the man behind the wheel of the BMW did not have the right to drive. The man who drove the BMW was last convicted of a traffic offense three years ago.
In order to determine the details of the incident, criminal proceedings were initiated and are being led by the North District Prosecutor's Office.
