Paper: More than 80 drunk drivers caught over holiday
As of Thursday, through regular police operations, spot checks, and civilian tip-offs, more than 80 drunk drivers were removed from Estonian roads over the days of Jaanilaupäev (June 23) and the following Jaanipäev (June 24), both national holidays.
On June 23, traditionally one of the worst days for drunk driving in Estonia, 27 intoxicated drivers were apprehended, daily Postimees writes (link in Estonian).
On Wednesday, a significant increase in the number of drunk drivers being removed from the roads happened, either via the help of tip-offs from the public or from the more dense network of police patrols and checks set up on roads during the holiday period.
Tago Trei, the leading law enforcement officer at the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA), said that on Wednesday, from 6 a.m. until late evening, over 40 reports from members of the public of drunk drivers were received: "It is obvious that traffic safety is an important topic to people in the best sense, everyone wants safety on the roads and to not have to worry about a dangerous driver."
Trei added that more than 50 drunk drivers were found on Estonian roads on Wednesday, roughly evenly distributed geographically, with 18 in South Estonia, 17 in eastern Estonia, and 11 in western and northern Estonia apiece.
